Quiz Bowl Results
Re: 4-H Dairy and Horse Project Members Compete at Regional and State Contests
4-H members and adult volunteers worked From November through April practicing and preparing for the Regional Events in the areas of Horse and Dairy Knowledge Contests which took place in March and April. Teams from all over the capital district were in attendance at regional contests which included Dairy Quiz Bowl, Horse Quiz Bowl. In the coming week youth will also be participating in Horse Communications, and Hippology (a horse knowledge contest).
At the 4-H Regional Dairy Quiz Bowl contest on March 13th in Greenwich, N.Y. You all have worked hard and have a lot to be proud of! In the Novice Division, the team of Jacob Cressy, Johnny Cressy, Krista Gogis and Jennifer Keehan along with coach Terri Phillips, placed sixth. In Individual placings, Jacob Cressy placed 8th.
In The Junior Division, the team of Mitch Zemken, Jessy Cressy, Laura Littrell, Aryn Feagles, and Jacob Feagles with coach Martin Kelly, placed Third. In individual standings, Jesse Cressy placed fourth and Laura Littrell placed seventh.
In the Senior Division, the team of Danielle Bartlett, Matthew Gogis, Levi Cressy, and Kelsi Hidde with coach Rebecca Ferry placed fifth. In Individual standings, Levi Cressy placed 8th. Also competing as members of other another county team were Erika Gogis and Ashley Oeser.
A huge thank you for all the time and commitment put in by the volunteer coaches Rebecca Ferry, Martin Kelly, and Terri Phillips as well as the parents who helped to make practices possible. We would also like to thank Amanda Gogis for serving as an event volunteer that day. In addition, we thank the Fonda –Fultonville School District for allowing us to have Quiz Bowl Practices at the school and the Farm Service Agency for hosting quiz bowl practices there as well.
On Saturday, March 20th, Fulton-Montgomery Counties 4-H Horse Bowl teams participated in the Region 5B Horse Bowl Contest in Cobleskill. Here are the results: (there were 6 teams in each of the three divisions). The Novice Team placed 3rd. In individual standings, Christina Bridge placed 2nd and Schuyler Claes placed 5th. Also on the Novice Team were Victoria Subik and Elli Doyle. The Novice Team was coached by Marsha Douglass. The Junior Team placed 4th. In individual standings, Arhianna Fleres placed 6th and Kaitlyn Duesler placed 8th. Also on the Junior Team were Haley Claes and Meghan Herrick. The Junior Team was coached by Breanne Duesler. The Senior Team placed 2nd . In individual placings, Dee Dee DeRosa placed 3rd, andAlex Briggs placed 4th. Also on the Senior Team were Molly O’Shea, Ashley Hernigle, Marybeth Allen, and Stephen Grubb. Then Senior Team was coached by Tamara Healy. Dee Dee DeRosa and Alex Briggs went to the state contest as part of the Regional 5B Senior Team on April 17th at Cornell University and Tamara Healy coached that Regional Team. The team placed second in the state and Alex Briggs placed 13th in individual competition. Thanks go out to our wonderful volunteer coaches, Tamara Healy, Marsha Douglass, and Breanne Duesler for all the hours they put in to practice with and coach these great 4-H youth! Thanks also go to Susan Mallery, Dan Crabill, Gretchen Subik and Beth Bridge for volunteering to help at the Regional Contest! Cornell Cooperative Extension of Fulton and Montgomery Counties is once again hosting a 4-H Dairy Judging Tour that is open to all 4-H youth from any county.
This year’s Dairy Judging Tour will begin at Clay Hill Farm (On Clay Hill Road and hosted by Dr. Lisa Tobler and Kerry Stowell) and will also visit Stowdale Farm (also hosted by Dr. Lisa Tobler and Kerry Stowell) at 1545 Kennedy Road, St. Johnsville. and The Feagles Farm1481 Kennedy Road, St. Johnsville..
Please pre-register by contacting Bonnie Peck at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Fulton and Montgomery Counties by April 23, 2010. Please indicate name and 4-H age for each youth attending as well as a contact phone number and/or cell phone number of the adult bringing the 4-H member. Please bring a bag lunch for the day.
Directions: Take route 5 West from St. Johnsville past Repepi’s and Lombardo’s. Two-three miles further, veer right onto Old Stat Road. (please note: if you cross a steel bridge on route 5, you have gone too far) A short distance up Old State Road, at the stop sign, turn right onto Clay Hill Road. At the top of the hill is the farm with a white barn ad 3 silos. If you get lost, you can call (518) 265-9639. Directions to the following farms will be provided at the first farm.

4-H Dairy Judging Barn Meeting
The next 4-H Dairy Judging Barn Meeting will be on Saturday, March 27, 2010 starting at 1:00 p.m. at Garritt Sammons’ Farm .
Directions: From Fonda…Take Route 5 West to Route 334, turn right on to 334 and follow in to Sammonsville. When 334 turns right…go straight onto County Route 116. The farm is at 986 Co Hwy 116.
Please contact me if you are planning on attending the Barn Meeting. Only those who have pre-registered will be contacted in the event of cancellation.

Dog Programs for this coming Spring!
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Fulton and Montgomery Counties will again be offering a opportunity for youth ages 8-19 to have fun with their dogs. The program offers children a variety of opportunities to play with their dogs. This spring the program will offer a couple of programs for youth.
The first is an “Intermediate 4-H Dog Agility Class” beginning March 29th from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Johnstown Area Community Center.
Next will be a Canine Good Citizen/Dog Obedience Program, also at the Johnstown Community Center. Participants would bring their to an eight -week class and learn how to train them in obedience. The Course will be from Tuesday, April 6, 2010 through May 25, 2010 and meet from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The April 6th session will be at the Cornell Cooperative Exension teaching kitchen on the ground level room 010 (parking is behind the building) and the remaining sessions will be at the Johnstown Area Community Center behind the Shirley Luck Senior Center. Participants who are not currently members of 4-H will be invited to enroll. Participants will learn about, puppy training, beginning obedience, and Canine Good Citizenship as well as develop skills in dog training and handling. To register, please call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 762-3909 extension 113. There will be a $10 registration fee collected at the first session. At the first session, participants will also be asked to bring copies of their rabies/distemper vaccinations (which must be up to date) but not their dogs.
From June 1 through August 24th (also on Tuesdays) from 6-8:00 p.m. at the Johnstown Area Community Center there will be 4-H Beginner Dog Agility Program, where kids and dogs can learn together to negotiate an obstacle course. The only requirement is that the dog and youth handler have some basic obedience skills. For those youth who have already participated in Dog Agility and are currently working their dogs off-leash…. Sam attended Agtech in Manhattan, Kansas to learn how to perform embryo transfer and implantation in 2001. Sam uses his passion for genetics and reproduction with 1600 cows on a dairy in Union Springs, New York….Spruce Haven Farm, owned by Doug Young, Jim Nocek , Rich Delaney and Potter Farms, LLC (Tim and Sam Potter).
This workshop is not geared towards beginners in the dairy project, older and/or more advanced 4-H members are encouraged to come! Please contact Bonnie to pre-register for this workshop. Note: only those who have registered will be contact in the case of cancellation.
